Microbeetle!

Green Semipoint-mouth Beetle

Date: June 19, 2024

Description: During a pretty overcast day, with some mild humidity, I decided I would go for a walk to a nearby field. On the edges of these fields are some small drainage basins (which were built wrong, they just catch watch) which go to the nearby floodplain I live next to. I noticed some tiny critters moving around, and when I took this photo I had no idea they were beetles. My guess is that they are feeding on the algae growing, although this might not be the case due ot their carnivorous jaws and their placement within Carabidae. No idea what these guys would feed off of that is < 1mm, they could be the few Carabids that might be omnivores. I have yet to find any data/research that looks into the diet of these guys. Perhaps an investigation is in order.
